Celebrities and Privacy Thesis Statement
Many people believe that celebrities must give up some of their privacy in exchange for the wealth and fame that celebrity status affords. After all, to become a celebrity, one must seek public attention and recognition, and a loss of privacy, some say, is an unavoidable trade-off. But should being a celebrity mean having no right to privacy? Should people who are well known for their work or skill be expected to share details about their home life, family, and loved ones? In a culture that lavishes attention on celebrities, it is worth examining celebrities' right to privacy. Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about celebrities' right to privacy. Perspective One: Our belief that celebrities must lose their right to privacy is the product of jealousy and envy. We resent celebrities for their wealth and fame, and so we punish them by intruding into their private lives. Perspective Two: Celebrities do give up some of their rights to privacy when they pursue a career that makes them famous. They can't expect to maintain a private life when the only way to become famous is to capture the imagination of the public. Perspective Three: Most people claim that privacy is important, but these days everyone with a social media account has given up some privacy for the sake of attention. We're not doing anything to celebrities that we aren't already doing to ourselves.
