Chapter 8 The Tipping point Summary Response Assignment
Question 1
Essay
Your first paragraph should be a summary of chapter 8 of Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. Your paragraph should restate in your own words the main point Gladwell makes in Chapter 8 and the key ideas that support it. The language of your summary should be independent of the original and contain few, if any, quotations. The summary must be accurate and complete, communicating your understanding of the chapter as a whole and its purpose. It should be understandable to a reader who is not already familiar with the book. Your summary paragraph should be approximately 150-200 words. Your response paragraph should narrow your focus to a key claim, idea, or concept that Gladwell raises in the chapter. In your first sentence of the paragraph, explain what that key claim, idea, or concept is, and provide its context (in which part of the chapter does Gladwell mention this? What is he discussing around it?). Then, provide a direct quote and put it in your own words, paraphrasing the key words and phrases in order to unlock the quote’s implications. For the rest of the paragraph, draw out the implications of the quote by answering one or more of the following: As a reader, what was your response to that idea, and why? How does this idea speak to you? Why does this key idea resonate with you, and why? If we think in the way the quotation suggests, what might follow? What might we gain? What might we lose? If this is true, then what else might be true? What’s significant in the way this chapter relates to the rest of the book? The response part should be roughly 200-300 words.
