Military Training (Knights) II
What was training like for Knights in Feudal Europe?
Royal or other especially large households had teachers in various subjects for the boys. Manuals of behavior and morality include material on table manners for boys in such households. The boys were also expected to learn music and chess, and to play with weapons and hunt. In noble households they were given special training sessions with arms, and special tournaments were organized for them; by their mid-teens they were expected to play an actual role in fighting. Although they might not be knighted yet, they could hope to serve as pages to noble men or women. This put them in a servile position, but only temporarily, as part of a life stage. Although a boy or young man at a royal or noble court would have been highly aware of his family background, he did not live the formative years of adolescence among his kin, but in a military atmosphere, highly charged with knightly values.
