Military Training (Samurai) III
What types of training did warriors experience in Feudal Japan?
A young samurai was expected to practice his swordsmanship by executing criminals. He could expect to perform his first execution before he turned sixteen. Horse riders would spend hours practicing yabusame: galloping along the firing ranges, controlling their horses with their knees, while shooting arrows at three small wooden targets, and, in some cases, dogs (a practice called inuoumono, which was discouraged by Buddhist priests, who eventually managed to persuade the samurai to use padded arrow tips to prevent injury to the animals).
