Many newly freed African Americans after the Civil War found themselves indebted to their former owners. 
Cooper Hughs Freedman, his wife, another woman, Charles Roberts, his wife Hannah and a boy are to work on a farm, cultivate forty acres in corn and twenty acres in cotton, maintain fences, and do all necessary farm work... under the control of IG Bailey... they will receive half of the cotton and a third of the corn and fodder raised... Charles Roberts Freedman and his wife Hannah also agree to do the house work for IG Bailey and his family... for fifty dollars at the end of 1867... Cooper Hughs Freedman agrees to care for the cattle and do the churning when necessary...
